I Know How You Feel: My Journey Overcoming Fear and Anxiety

Fear is a nasty thing. A horrible thing. And it creates something equally horrible and nasty: anxiety. Being in a constant state of tense uneasiness is no way to live life.

The Impact of Fear on Life

Once upon a time I had plenty of my own phobias, fears and anxieties in my life. I know personally how debilitating they can be. For years, I battled various phobias, fears, and anxieties. I experienced how these feelings can drain joy, stifle beauty, and erode moments you can never get back. Fear is all consuming. It turns what should be our vibrant life into a limited, stressful existence.

For years, I was trapped in a cycle of anxiety, avoiding experiences that could have enriched my life. There were relationships I neglected and adventures I missed due to my fears. This state of intense worry became a whirlwind of “what-ifs,” draining my energy and disconnecting me from the world around me.

A Turning Point in My Journey

After years of struggling, I reached a pivotal moment when I realised that things had to change. The journey ahead seemed daunting, but I was determined to reclaim my life. Through my exploration of psychology and inner healing, I began to understand how my mind worked and how fear had taken control.  Fear, I discovered, is often rooted in a false sense of control. By learning to let go and forgiving myself for the things I couldn’t control, I began to heal. The change was remarkable and, in many ways, life-saving.

I saw firsthand how powerful the right techniques and mindset shifts could be. The realisation that I had the power to control my mind—and not the other way around—was a turning point. It was the most eye-opening and liberating experience of my life. This breakthrough ignited a passion inside me, leading me to delve deeper into the psychology of fear and anxiety.

This newfound knowledge allowed me to let go of the illusion of control I had clung to for so long.

The Power of Transformation

The realisation that I had the power to change my circumstances was transformative. With my newfound sense of purpose, I embarked on a quest for knowledge and inner peace. I spent several years studying psychology, neuroscience, and therapy techniques that could help not only me but others as well. The deeper I went, the more I was fascinated by the human brain’s capacity for change. During this time, I continued practising what I learned, seeing my life transform in ways I never thought possible.

This period of intense learning and growth eventually led me to start helping others—first friends and family, then organisations, and finally, clients. I knew I wanted to make this my life’s work, but I also wanted it to be something I was genuinely passionate about. This is when I had an idea that combined two of my greatest passions: helping people and my love for animals.

From Passion to Purpose: Creature Courage is Born

I’ve always had a love for the creatures that many people fear: spiders, snakes, lizards, rats, and other animals that society tends to avoid. Growing up in a household filled with animals—from parrots to tarantulas—I developed a deep appreciation for these misunderstood creatures. While many people recoil at the sight of a spider, I was fascinated by them.Britain Stelly With Gecko

I started keeping tarantulas as an adult to help me get through my own journey of overcoming depression and anxiety. This strange but incredibly interesting hobby helped me make so many new friends and gave me something positive to focus on.  Spiders in a strange way saved my life. I am forever in gratitude to my eight legged friends.

It was during this time that I realised something interesting: arachnophobia is one of the most common phobias worldwide. That’s when everything clicked. I could combine my passion for ‘scary’ animals and my expertise in anxiety to help people overcome their fears. The fear of spiders seemed like a great place to start!

This wasn’t just about treating a phobia; it was about helping people reclaim their lives. I knew how debilitating fear could be, and I didn’t want others to suffer the way I had. I wanted to offer a solution that would not only tackle the phobia but also provide a holistic approach to managing over all anxiety.

Building a Business with a Greater Purpose

Starting a business is no small feat, and they say it’s crucial to pursue something you love. For me, the love was twofold: helping people overcome fear and, of course, working with animals. When I founded Creature Courage, it was about more than just conquering animal phobias—it was about changing lives. I wanted to leave  legacy of good. I knew that if I could help people tackle their worst fears, they would experience a level of freedom and confidence that would transform every aspect of their lives.

Creature Courage became my vehicle for not only helping people conquer their animal phobias but also addressing anxiety on a broader level. Over time, I expanded from focusing solely on animal-related fears to offering general anxiety coaching. Thus a new satellite business was formed: ‘Freedom in Courage.’ I had become an expert in anxiety, and I wanted to use that knowledge to help liberate people from all their fears in a holistic and powerful way.

Why Animal Phobias Are the Perfect Catalyst for Change

One thing I’ve learned over the years is that animal phobias are often a symptom of a deeper anxiety issue. By addressing the phobia, we also tackle the root causes of anxiety. The process of overcoming something as specific as a fear of spiders can be the first step toward conquering other fears and anxieties. It’s not just about removing the fear of a creature; it’s about building courage and resilience that extends into every part of life.

This is why I believe so strongly in the work we do at Creature Courage. We’re not just helping people live peacefully with animals—they’re gaining tools and strategies to live more empowered, fearless lives.
